Introduction
Some of you might be wondering if I made a typo in mentioning "Bruno Zumino" among those whom I think influenced this drama’s cinematography (such as Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and Bong Joon-ho). We know that, in the drama, "Bruno Zumino" is the brand name of Hwa-young's expensive and rare heels. We also do know that there's no actual Italian brand of footwear named "Bruno Zumino"; Hwa-young's heels are actually the “Jimmy Choo Bee 100 Embellished Leather Pump.”
I don't know why or how writer Jung Seo-kyoung chose the name "Bruno Zumino." I haven't found anything on English-language websites about this matter; the answer may be in Naver, but I can't read Korean. Anyway, there was a real life "Bruno Zumino" who was a theoretical physicist and faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley; among other achievements, Zumino was a proponent in proving the CPT theorem. At the risk of terribly oversimplying things, let me say for now that the CPT theorem has something to do with symmetry. I will explain more below on how Bruno Zumino, the CPT theorem, and symmetry could have influenced this drama’s cinematography.
(I'm by no means knowledgeable about Physics. When I was a freshman in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, I lost my engineering scholarship because I failed Physics 41, the introductory course for engineering students).
Early this year when I read about "Little Women," I immediately became interested in watching it primarily because of Nam Ji-hyun. I've been a big fan of Nam Ji-hyun ever since I first saw her as the young Deokman in the 2009 blockbuster historical drama "Queen Seondeok." (She was 14 years old at that time.)
I was an English major in college, but I didn't read "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. Novels weren't my thing; I preferred poetry, short stories, plays, biographies, and essays. I tried reading Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" but couldn't finish it. I just skimmed Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged." I read almost through W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" but couldn't understand what it was all about. I only read the “Grand Inquisitor” chapter of “Brothers Karamazov” by Dostoeyevsky. Although I carried around my copy of Nick Joaquin's novella "The Woman Who Had Two Navels," I didn't finish reading it.
The only novels that I read completely were “Exodus” and “Battle Cry” by Leon Uris, “Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, “To Sir, With Love ” by E.R. Braithwaite, “The Day of the Jackal” by Frederick Forsyth, "The Heart of the Matter" by Graham Greene, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” by Carson McCullers, and “Cry, The Beloved Country” by Alan Paton.
(Can "Little Prince" be considered a novel? If yes, then count it as among the novels that I've read. Ha ha.)
Among my favorites in poetry are Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet," Edward Fitzgerald's "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," Emily Dickinson, and Shakespeare's sonnets. I oftentimes recited to my students the famous lines from "Macbeth" ("Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time ...").
Thus, although I enjoyed that scene in Ep. 9 where Hyo-rin recited some famous lines from "Macbeth" during the play rehearsal, I completely missed the reference in Ep. 10 to the novel "Jane Eyre" by Emily Brontë.
As I wrote in this discussion's title, I will discuss what I think are the influences of directors such as Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and Bong Joon-ho in this drama's cinematography. Speaking of influences, you might be interested in the song "Influencer" by my favorite rock group Band-Maid. The song is a commentary on social media influencers and their endless quest for likes. You'll be blown away by the song's bass solo and the lead guitar solo.

In my analysis of the visuals, cinematography, and editing of “Vincenzo,” I pointed out its numerous uses of 90-degree Dutch angle shots. In “Little Women,” PD Kim Hee-won and her cinematographer again use a lot of 90-degree Dutch angle shots.

Want to convey tension, anxiety, uneasiness, confusion or similar feelings of disorientation in a composition? Tilting your camera angle to one side — essentially, the camera equivalent of tilting one’s head to look at something — can achieve this.
Also known as the Dutch Tilt, German Angle, canted angle, canted camera, or oblique angle, the technique consists of an angled camera shot where the horizon line isn’t parallel with the bottom of the frame, and vertical lines are at an angle to the side of the frame.

B. Reflections or mirror images; theoretical physicist Bruno Zumino, the CPT theorem, and symmetry

At the terrible risk of oversimplifying what the CPT Theorem means, we might say that it speaks of “symmetry” and “mirror images.”
Ethan Siegel in his article “This Is The One Symmetry That The Universe Must Never Violate” begins his discussion of CPT Theorem by saying:
For most of us, when we hear the word symmetry, we think about reflecting things in a mirror. Some of the letters of our alphabet exhibit this type of symmetry: “A” and “T” are vertically symmetric, while “B” and “E” are horizontally symmetric. “O” is symmetric about any line that you draw, as well as rotational symmetry: no matter how you rotate it, its appearance is unchanged.
“There are many letters of the alphabet that exhibit particular symmetries. Note that the capital letters shown here have one and only one line of symmetry; letters like ’I’ or ’O’ have more than one.”
Siegel then provides a graphic showing that capital letters B, C, D, E, K exhibit symmetry if we cut them in the middle with a horizontal line. The capital letters A, M, T, U, V, W, and Y exhibit symmetry when we cut them in the middle with a vertical line.
I stand to be corrected, but I think that PD Kim Hee-won and her cinematographer took writer Jung Seo-kyoung’s reference to “Bruno Zumino” and used it to enrich this drama’s visuals through reflected or mirrored images that exhibit symmetry. The very first example of this symmetry through a reflected image is in Ep. 1 when In-joo looks for the right time and opportunity to ask her immediate boss for an advance on her salary (which she needs for In-hye’s Europe school trip).

Two transitions that I like (which also depict horizontal symmetry and vertical symmetry):
(1) Ep. 9 (horizontal symmetry): Hyo-rin and In-hye plan to escape to Japan and then to Russia; Hyo-rin entrusts to In-hye her bonds and bank passbooks. During the play rehearsal, Hyo-rin collapses after she finds out that In-hye has disappeared. As she’s lying on the floor, the screen gets split: she’s on the upper half of the screen while a snowy landscape is on the lower half. That composite image then cross dissolves into a shot of a moving train, cutting the snowy landscape into half (with a voice-over of In-hye speaking about their plans to go to Hokkaido). That shot then cross dissolves into the image of Hyo-rin lying on a hospital bed.
(These train scenes may be an homage to Bong Joon-ho’s critically acclaimed 2013 movie "Snowpiercer.")
(2) Ep. 8 (vertical symmetry): Through the CCTV footage of her mother leaving the house wearing a fur coat and the black doll from the “Closed Room,” In-hye reveals to Hyo-rin that her mother killed Hwa-young; the black doll is right side up as Hyo-rin stares at it. Then, the upside down image of the black doll cross dissolves into In-joo (in Singapore) as she’s stunned to see Sang-a, instead of Hwa-young.
C. Stairs (or inclines) as visual symbols mainly of the Oh sisters’ struggles to rise above their lowly circumstances and the economic class conflicts in Korean society; Bong Joon-ho’s influence on “Little Women”
The very first time we see stairs in this drama is in Ep. 1 with In-hye climbing (1) a steep cement staircase on her way home and (2 a winding staircase that leads up to her family’s house on the rooftop. The last time we see stairs in the drama is when In-joo goes home after visiting Hwa-young in jail; she climbs up the staircase that leads to her family’s apartment.
In his Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” Bong Joon-ho depicts the class conflict and wealth inequality in Korean society. He uses stairs or upward and downward movements of the characters to symbolize how the Kim family tries (but fails) to rise above their circumstances. The YouTube video “Exploring Visual Language and Symbolism in "Parasite” illustrates this symbolism through various scenes in the movie.

In Ep. 11, Park Jae-sang commits suicide by jumping off from the rooftop of the building where in Ep. 7 he brought In-hye and tried to allure her with his grandiose plans. His choice of taking his life from that place ironically echoes the motto of Jeongran Society: “How high do you think that someone from rock bottom can rise up to? To the highest and the brightest place.”
In Ep. 4, Sang-a leads In-hye down to the basement where in the middle of an ornate room stood the “Father Tree” that’s nourishes the blue orchids. That physical descent is a metaphor of Sang-a’s depravity.
In Ep. 7, Hyo-rin remembers that as a child, she climbed up a staircase that led to a hidden room; that staircase and hidden room were a place of refuge for her.

How to Creatively Use a Close-Up Camera Angle to Convey Emotion”: “A close-up shot is a type of camera shot size in film and television that adds emotion to a scene. It tightly frames an actor’s face, making their reaction the main focus in the frame. The director of photography films a close-up with a long lens at a close range. This allows the actor to establish a strong emotional connection with the audience, and the audience to intimately see details in the subject’s face they wouldn’t see otherwise in a wide shot, long shot, or full shot.”
The article “Extreme Close-Up Shots: Creative Examples That Work” (Studio Binder) defines what an extreme closeup is:
An extreme close-up shot frames a subject very closely, often so much so that the outer portions of the subject are cut off by the edges of the frame. On an actor, this is commonly used to show specific portions of the body, like the face or hip, but it can go closer to show only an actor’s mouth, or even a single eye.
Inanimate objects can also be framed in an extreme close-up shot, but everything is based on the scale and size of the object. If you were to frame a steaming tea-pot in an extreme close-up, you might focus on the spout or base. The idea is that you cannot see the entire subject, but rather are forced to focus on a particular portion, hopefully, for the desired effect.
From “Choker Shot” (Media College):
The choker shot is very similar to the extreme closeup (ECU), and the two terms are often used interchangeably. A typical choker shows the subject’s face from just above the eyebrows to just below the mouth, as pictured left. Other common variations are illustrated below. Our preferred definition for the choker is a shot half way between a closeup and an extreme closeup.
As with all shots that are this tight (i.e. zoomed in this much), you really need a good reason to use it. Chokers should be used judiciously as not everyone will be flattered in such a revealing view.
One of the most famous choker shots in cinema history is Jack Nicholson’s “Heeeere’s Johnny!” moment in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” Because both the hole in the door and the camerawork isolate Nicholson’s expressive visage, you could watch the scene on mute and still understand how Kubrick wants you to feel.

In a rack focus or focus pull, one element (for example, a character or an object) is in the background while another element is in the foreground. The background element is out of focus (blurred), and the foreground element is in focus. (Or vice-versa). Then, as the foreground element becomes out of focus, the background element becomes in focus. (Or vice-versa.) Posted below are some examples of rack focuus or focus pull from this drama.
Double rack focus from Ep. 1: As In-joo, In-kyung, and In-hye prepare the table and the food during In-hye’s birthday, their mother comes homes. In-joo and In-hye are in the foreground while In-kyung is in the background.
In-kyung is in focus while both In-joo and In-hye are out of focus. As she becomes out of focus, In-hye becomes in focus. As In-hye becomes out of focus, In-joo becomes in focus. (I’ve slowed down the GIF so that you can see the rack focus better.)
Double rack focus from Ep. 1: In Hwa-young’s apartment, In-joo is facing the mirror; she’s in focus while the reflected image of the closet is out of focus. Rack focus from Ep. 9 (with visual cue): Choi Hee-jae wants to use his cache of weapons to kill Park Jae-sang, but In-kyung says that they can bring him down through an exposé. She calls up the various TV news programs, hoping that at least one news program would be interested in her exposé on Park Jae-sang. But the news programs turn her down. As the camera trucks (moves parallel) to the right, she becomes out of focus as Choi Hee-jae appears in the frame and becomes in focus.
Notice that In-kyung is boxed in by the frame created by the wooden posts to depict or reinforce her dilemma; the next shot shows Choi Hee-jae checking his gun as he hears In-kyung being turned down by another news program.
Double rack focus from Ep. 10: In-joo is stunned to see that her account balance is zero (when before it had 70 billion won); she checks to see if its really true or if she just made a mistake. Her smartphone is in the foreground, her left hand is in the medium ground, and her right hand is in the background. The smartphone is in focus while both her hands are out of focus. As the smartphone becomes out of focus, her left hand becomes in focus (with her right hand still put of focus). As her right hand becomes in focus, the smartphone and her left hand are now both out of focus).
Rack focus in In-joo’s eyes from Ep. 6?: In-joo (in an extreme closeup) is stunned as she views the dashcam video of Park Jae-sang going into Hwa-young’s apartment on the night Hwa-young died. Notice that her right eye is in focus while her left eye is out of focus. As her right eye becomes out of focus, her left eye becomes in focus.
I don’t think this was done in-camera; probably, this was done during the post production stage, with the editor using Gaussian blur to achieve this effect. Why? From my experience as a photographer, In-joo’s eyes (from the camera’s vantage point) are almost on the same plane. With even the biggest aperture (lens opening) of f/1.8 or f/1.4 in a photographic lens for a shallow depth of field, both her eyes would be in focus.
The person responsible for rack focus shots isn’t the cinematographer; it’s the focus puller or the “1st assistant camera.” Please read my discussion titled “Our Blues” (this drama’s cinematography is a masterclass in the art of rack focus or “focus pull” and the important work of the focus puller).

(1) Out of focus shots to depict or reinforce emotional or psychological tension
Ep. 9: Sang-a manipulates Park Jae-sang into ordering the killing of In-kyung. She and Park Jae-sang come in focus or out of focus several times as the scene unfolds; the tension is further reinforced through a 90-degree Dutch angle shot.
Ep. 12: In General Won Gi-seon’s hospital room, Sang-a confronts Principal Jang Sa-pyeong. As she stands up from her chair, she becomes out of focus. In the next shot, as she begins to walk towards Jang Sa-pyeong, she’s still out of focus. She only becomes in focus after she stabs Jang Sa-pyeong in the neck with the blue orchid-laced syringe.

(2) Almost like “breaking the 180-degree rule” or “crossing the line” in scenes from Ep. 11 and Ep. 4 (similar shot in “Alchemy of Souls”)
Ep. 11 scene with In-kyung and Hwa-young: A leader of the Bobae Savings Bank scandal victims explains to In-kyung how Hwa-young was different from other victims who merely wanted their money back. In-kyung is frame left and facing the camera, while the leader is frame right. As the camera trucks (moves parallel) to the right, In-kyung disappears from view as she’s obscured by the leader. When the camera completely passes the leader, we see Hwa-young instead of In-kyung and hear her saying that people don’t have free will because they’re controlled by money.
Notice that in the shot with In-kyung (present timeline) and with Hwa-young (flashback), but shots have the same location and with the same two people in the background. These two shots may have been “stitched” together (or the camera stopped moving; with Hwa-young then sitting in for In-kyung, the camera started moving again).
This Ep. 11 shot from "Little Women" is similar to a shot from Ep. 6 of "Alchemy of Souls."
Ep. 4 scene with In-joo and Soo-im: In-joo agrees to be hit by Soo-im ten times in exchange for ir the money that she needs for In-hye’s operation; she’s frame right while Soo-im is frame left. The camera pedestals up (as she stands up); as she moves to her right, the camera tracks her (by arcing counterclockwise). At the end of the shot, she’s now frame left while Soo-im is now frame right.

“The 180 degree rule is a filmmaking guideline for spatial relations between two characters on screen. The 180 rule sets an imaginary axis, or eye line, between two characters or between a character and an object. By keeping the camera on one side of this imaginary axis, the characters maintain the same left/right relationship to each other, keeping the space of the scene orderly and easy to follow.”

Notice that the Studio Binder article speaks about “bending” the 180- degree rule. Examples of “bending” the 180-degree rule are these shots from “Heat” (blockbuster 1995 action movie starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro) and from “Parasite” by Bong Joon-ho.

(4) If someone says that a drama is shot like a movie, is it a compliment or a diss?
If I remember correctly, "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" stopped its broadcast after Ep. 4 because the producers decided to have the four episodes reshot. One comment that I read said that the episodes were shot like a movie. Because of the context, I took the comment "shot like a movie" as a diss.
Sometime in 2017, while I was watching "Saimdang," somebody said that Ep. 1 was shot like a movie. Again, from the context, I took the comment "shot like a movie" as a diss.
Two years ago, I watched "River Where The Moon Rises." Somebody described Ep. 1 as having been shot like a movie. But this time, based on the context, I took the comment "shot like a movie" as a compliment.
What do people mean exactly when they say that a drama is "shot like a movie"? Is it a diss or a compliment?

first, i want to establish: i am NOT trying to dictate what is beautiful and what isn't. 'objective beauty standards' are subjective. i do NOT condone korean beauty standards as universal truths. i will discuss certain 'standards', features, concepts, and tips on how to adjust or achieve certain effects; i am NOT implying those without these are not beautiful, or that features 'need to be fixed' or look a certain way. i firmly believe everyone is beautiful as they are. if you don't care for a short midface, please disregard this guide! we are merely exploring a beauty trend. do not let restrictive, pedantic beauty standards be toxic, misogynistic, or detrimental to you.
lastly please note this guide covers makeup techniques. i will not discuss skincare, or any other kind of cosmetic procedure including facial massage, fillers, botox, surgeries, etc., (as i just don't have enough knowledge on the topic) so if you are not interested in makeup, skip the tips section!

introduction

when we consider what makes a face beautiful, we tend to single out individual features to measure - eyes, lips, skin, jawline - and often accidentally overlook the key factor of facial harmony.
facial harmony is the interplay of features, their positions and composition on our face. it is the reason the exact same feature can be flattering on one, yet discordant on another; or why someone can have seemingly 'basic/average' features yet still be pleasant to look at.
the more harmonious your facial features, the more 'objectively beautiful' the face.
the midface is a crucial factor of facial harmony, and a small midface is a relatively universal and also especially a korean beauty standard. today we will explore what it is, why it is considered so attractive, and how to achieve it with oft-used east asian makeup techniques.
if you already know what a midface is, skip right ahead on to the tips section!
TLDR: a short midface is attractive because it creates the illusion of a 'younger, sweeter, cuter' face; it can be emphasised with makeup (and hair, accessories, etc.), mostly by 'breaking up' and filling the plane of the midface. go to the bottom for a tldr summary of the makeup tips.

the short midface

the midface is the middle third of what is called the 'facial thirds', as described by leonardo da vinci in the old analysis of human anatomy. you might remember using this in art class to draw proportionate faces! i'll include a graphic below for reference; please note it spans the hairline to the chin.
just for today, we will take the 'general standard' when considering the midface, spanning browbone to the upper lip.
the midface clocks the position of all major structural features - eyes, nose, lips, brows, cheek/bone structure. in a shorter midface, features are more compact, closer together, with less space between them. this is considered a korean beauty standard (part of 'small face'). why?
firstly, it is a characteristic of neoteny - that is, to essentially look like a baby. babies' features are compacted close together, with relatively big eyes; as we grow, generally the face enlarges and features spread, changing proportions. neoteny of the face is considered a universal factor of attractiveness in women, where youth innately connotes fertility, engendering subconscious preference. this is coupled with the appearance of youth, innocence, and purity being one of south korea's biggest and most longstanding beauty standards; 'baby face' is also an increasingly popular current western beauty trend as well.
secondly, the concentration of features gives the illusion of a smaller face/head, making features (like eyes) seem bigger relatively, and the body longer proportionally, both of which are prominent korean beauty standards; a small head is also often a western beauty standard for the same reasons - many top models have it. (small face/head can also be measured by head size relative to body, size/shape of jaw, distance between lips and jaw/chin, etc.)
overall, a shorter midface makes a face seem 'cuter', 'sweeter', 'younger', 'fresher', and more delicate.

one of the biggest current beauty trends in south korea is the 'sexy-cute' visual; you'll notice it in many of the current 'it girls', the trend-setting celebrities well known for their iconic visuals like blackpink's jennie and ive's wonyoung, and also famous faces like han sohee, lee sung kyung, blackpink's lisa, red velvet's joy, twice's tzuyu, etc.

many have shorter midfaces, and rounder cheeks (contributing to a shorter, fuller face), which lends a young, 'sweet' babyfaced vibe, which, with big eyes and heart-shaped/pouty lips and delicate features, contribute to the 'cute' factor while balanced by 'sexy' factors like body, full lips, feline eyes, facial expressions/etc. this trend is another reason why a short midface is currently so popular and trendy. so if you've ever felt insecure about a short face and full cheeks, now is your time to shine!
that said, please remember a short mid-face is not the essential standard of beauty! many incredibly beautiful people have longer faces and spaced features, and are beautiful not in spite of, but along with and because of it - think blackpink's jisoo (considered one of kpop's current greatest visuals) or rose, sunmi, bella hadid, adriana lima, megan fox, liv tyler, etc. longer faces tend to have elegant, graceful, sophisticated, classy, mature, sexy, or even mysterious vibes - so every face has its benefits and unique beauty!

the essential factor is that the overall face is proportionate and harmonious - the 'perfect ratio' is for the facial thirds to be equal (but, even if your facial thirds are not exactly 'proportionate' by someone else's standards, you are still beautiful just as you are ok.)

achieving the short midface

chances are, you may already use some of these techniques without realizing it shortens the midface! you might do it and think 'wow, my face looks better but i don't know exactly why' - but now you know. many of these also work by enhancing other features so even if you don't care for the midface you can still try them for other benefits.
imagine applying full coverage foundation all over your face, blanking everything out. suddenly the face looks super flat and weird and lifeless, right? until you 'add dimension' back with blush, bronzer, highlight, contour, etc. these steps 'break up' and 'fill up' the face, and shortening the midface plays into this. we can break it down into several areas, which i will cover below.
*before we go on, i want to emphasise again that we are NOT 'correcting' or 'fixing' features. we are just adjusting the appearance of features to fit a certain kind of visual. there are NO 'bad' features.
SKIN.
skin is the base of the whole face. texture can be used to give the illusion of varying volume - the greater the glow, the greater the volume. this is because when a surface reflects light, changes in shape are highlighted, and the perception of volume or curve is created.
to create a sensation of more volume around the cheeks and midface, have glowy base makeup. it doesn't have to be super 'wet/dewy', but a healthy, hydrated, skin-like glow. you can achieve this with skincare, dewy primer or foundation, highlighter, luminous finishing powder or spray, or any method you prefer. if you struggle with looking 'puffy/swollen', consider strategic powdering - powder the areas you don't want so much shine or volume, such as the perimeter of the face and the nasolabial folds, and leave the rest glowy. stay balanced and realistic.
try to decrease 'hollow' or 'sunken' areas like dark eye circles with concealecolour corrector (sorry i don't know much about concealing undereyes, but there are lots of good tutorials out there). you want to create that illusion of fullness in the face, of bouncy fresh skin with a lot of collagen and hydration.

EYEBROWS.
brows are the 'roof' of the midface.
lower straighter brows shorten the appearance of the midface. if you want to compress the midface from the top, fill in your eyebrows lower and soften the arch; straighter, thicker brows tend to lend a more innocent 'youthful' vibe compared to thinner arched brows, which elongate the face and visually expand the eye socket area. the angle makes a difference; downturned brows give younger, sweeter, 'worried' wide-eyed vibes, while upturned eyebrows give a more intense, fierce, 'angry' vibe.

you can 'expand' the eye socket area by lengthening the brows to the side. shorter brows leave more of a vertical 'space' bar on the side of your face that has an elongating effect. extending the brow will convert more midface to 'eye area' and broaden the midface while making the head/face itself look smaller; but it might also give the effect of more spaced out features and counterintuitively a narrower face. so it depends on your natural face and technique; experiment to see what works.
that said, please note that brows that are disharmoniously low and straight for your personal face can look heavy, masculine, or tired, especially if too thick/dark (it should be harmonious with your depth, saturation, size/shape of your personal facial features). it can give more of the effect of 'squashing' the midface than shortening if you're not careful.

EYES.
the main idea is expanding the eye socket by 'claiming more area' as the 'eye area', and encroaching into the midface to shorten it or decrease its area.
intuitively, the focus is the undereye (and avoiding the ~ sleep deprivation aesthetic ~). the undereye is fun to play with especially if you have difficulty with the upper lid (hooded eyes, monolids, etc. that traditional tips don't always play nice with). defining the lower lid and undereye can be a gamechanger both to shorten the midface, and also if you naturally lack lower lashline definition - this is common in east asians with light skin and sparser hailower lashes. adding back definition can emphasise the beauty of your natural eyes that previously wasn't as easy to see, or even tweak the shape if you want.
basic tips include not taking your foundation/concealer all the way up to the lower lashline; leave a tiny bit of natural skin rimming the lower lashline. this 'claims' more area as 'eye' instead of 'cheek', and helps makeup look less stark.
you can place eyeshadow or eyeliner in this area; keep close to the lashline - going too low can 'drag down' the face. follow the shape of your eye. the lower lid usually should not be darker or thicker than the upper lid; this can drag down the eyes/face. balance with the upper lid.
curling the lower lashes downwards with mascara can claim more eye area and 'open up the eyes'. if you struggle with sparse lower lashes clumping, use a mascara with a thin brush and dry formula, take the excess off the wand, whisk lashes lightly for a wispier look, and comb with a clean spoolie.
the advanced version is aegyo sal, the icon of kbeauty. what differentiates aegyo sal from 'eyebags' is 'eyebags' are generally shadowy, hollow/sunken (tho sometimes they puff), and lower on the face (which gives a 'dragging' effect); meanwhile, aegyo sal are closer to the eyes, bright, puffy, plump fat. they are also usually narrower. they not only shorten the midface by taking up cheek space, but add to 'attractiveness' by claiming more space as the 'eye area' (thus making the eye area take up more of the face and seem relatively 'bigger'), and creating a 'happy expression', since aegyo sal tends to be most prominent when smiling or tensing up facial muscles - either way, it demonstrates emotion.
if you do not naturally have any aegyo sal at all, you might not be able to create aegyo sal that looks realistic in real life with only makeup. but if you don't mind, by all means go ahead and create them! these tips however are mostly for emphasising pre-existing aegyo sal.
if your aegyo sal is very faint, smile to push them out and use that as a template to trace. drawing the aegyo sal too high encroaches into the eye and gives a swollen/puffy effect; pull it too thick/low and it looks like an eyebag; giving it too much of a deep curve can also make it resemble eyebag. harmonize the shape and thickness with the overall shape of your eye and upper lid - again it shouldn't be heavier or darker than the upper eye or it may drag the eye down.
use a very light hand, build slowly; unless you have sharp/strong features/contrast, aegyo sal usually only needs to be quite light to look natural. try to use shades that already exist on your face - such as your contour or brow pencil to contour, and face or inner corner highlight to highlight (if you don't want shimmer, use a light matte to highlight) - this will harmonize it to the rest of your face. you can try those fine pens marketed for aegyo sal, but personally i find they don't look realistic on anyone in real life. if you need more visual guidance, there are tons of aegyo sal tutorials online.
because the midface goes up to the brow bone, claiming more of that upper lid area as the eye and drawing attention to the eyes can help shorten the overall midface. curling your eyelashes, eyeshadow on the upper lid, contouring the eye socket (remember to follow the shape if you've lengthened your brow), thicker eyeliner, can help with this. much like the elongating the eyebrow, elongating the eye can either add to or subtract from the midface depending on your features, so this is another area you have to experiment on your own.
this is a stretch, but circle lenses with a larger graphic diameter than your natural iris enlarges the appearance of eyes, which gives the illusion of taking up more space, hence a smaller midface and face; it will also draw people's attention more towards your eyes, which are in the middle of your face, drawing attention away from the periphery. (be careful not to go too big; if you lose too much eye whites, you can end up with a 'dog/horse eye' effect).
observe the effect of lashes, aegyo sal, eye socket contour, and circle lenses (please note that the makeup in this image is quite exaggerated, it would probably look more unnatural and unrealistic in real life)

CHEEK & NOSE.
the cheek/nose area (along with eyes) gives the most impact, and there are many techniques here.
first, blush placement. the simplest most impactful method is the 'sunburnt' or igari style, across the bridge of the nose and the midface. this is why the 'drunk' flush is so cute. it 'breaks' and 'fills up' the midface and brings everything closer together. you can use bronzer if you prefer. it's helpful to go a bit higher, closer to the eyes, so it 'lifts' the face instead of 'dragging down' and lengthening the midface, but not too high that you leave a blank gap underneath; it may also be helpful to avoid 'draping' that brings blush up to sculpt the cheekbones and the temples - this will narrow and elongate the midface, though it will make your overall face appear smaller of course, and is great if you prefer slimming the appearance of the face.
another placement is directly on the cheeks at the front of the face, close to under the eyes; again it draws attention upwards towards the eyes, and also to the fullness of the cheeks. it looks very sweet, and lends that adorable exerted or about-to-cry vibe.
these aren't the only placements. play around! in general, place blush on the broad frontal plane of the cheeks, and avoid blush on the sides of the face that 'sculpt' or contour' the cheekbones (you can go the other way if you would rather narrow your face shape), though you can let your blush blend out slightly to the side to avoid that 'side vertical space bar' i mentioned under eyebrows. and try not to apply blush too low as this can drag the face down as well (if you have a habit of smiling and then applying blush to the apples of your cheeks, be aware that the area usually falls lower when you are no longer smiling).

in terms of shade, choose a colour harmonious on your colouring (not necessarily 'natural'). a bright tone will draw more attention to the cheeks and add volume (that said, cheeks are not usually a main feature, so drawing too much attention to them can be unflattering). a colour with clear tone or pastel milky base will also add volume (if your skin is darker, beware white base getting ashy). and of course classic nude/neutral/natural blush always works. you can layer bright blush on top of soft blush in a radiating gradient to create more dimension.
also, a blush with a glowy finish will emphasise volume and shape more compared to a matte blush, just like with base makeup.

remember that shiny highlight reflects light on curves that already exist. you may see beauty gurus carve out shapes that don't exist with highlight and contour and look good in youtube videos or posed instagram photos, but in real life, with moving around and shifting lights, it doesn't work as well. highlight and contour only really works on something that already exists. that said, you can still manipulate strategically!
when highlighting the cheeks, instead of popping highlight high on the very peak of the cheekbones, consider highlighting a broader area over the front of the cheeks for more glow and volume. you can mix highlight with your blush, or apply highlight under blush/foundation for a more natural, blended look.
if highlighting the nose, don't apply one long narrow strip down the bridge. break it up; highlight the bridge, then leave a gap before highlighting the tip. you can further contour the top of the tip (but if you don't naturally have a protruding tip, you don't have to do this; remember, contour and highlight only works realistically to emphasise features that already exist). you can also powder down or detract highlighting from the area between the brows; this will shorten the appearance of the nose bridge hence nose hence midface. you can contour more horizontal 'breaking' lines along the bottom of the nose tip. if you struggle with contour, consider a lighter greyer desaturated shade, or using your blush for a more harmonious/cohesive vibe. you can also place blush on the tip of the nose to add volume and break the length up.
if you want volume without exacerbating texture or emphasising 'curved' volume, highlight with a matte shade - a matte bright surface can add flat volume. this is especially useful for areas like next to the nose to avoid lines or puffiness.
try to conceal redness around the nose, especially if below the tip; otherwise it will pull attention and 'drag the face down'. nasolabial folds can also draw the eye down; you can use powder or other concealing methods to reduce the appearance of its fold/curve.

LIPS.
the philtrum is the area between the nose and upper lip. a long philtrum may 'pull down' and create the appearance of a longer midface (and lower face, and bigger head/face in general).
no such thing as 'ideal' philtrum ok all are beautiful but just use this to visualise
its appearance can be shortened by contouring and highlighting lower on the tip of the nose (this will depend on the shape of your own nose), highlighting the ridges of the philtrum (this gives it a more raised appearance and breaks up the visual of a long flat surface), and most obviously by overlining the upper lip.
depending on your lip line definition and shape, a defined vs. blurry overline might look better; if you have a very defined lip line, you might not be able to overline in a way that looks natural. using a shade similar to your base lip colour to overline can look more natural. you can also highlight the cupid's bow to emphasise its height, thus restricting the 'philtrum area', and also creating a more rosebud/heart-shaped lip shape (along with blurry-overlining only at the cupid's bow), which is very trendy in douyin makeup. overall, this step is tricky; it can look pretty and natural, but it can also easily look very fake and unflattering in real life, especially if overdone. experiment and see that works for you!

using a glossy lip or other lip makeup to distract away from the philtrum and draw attention to the lips instead or increase its fullness and volume relative to the philtrum, may also help (but it may also draw more attention to the philtrum, so ymmv). you can also try adding a fake mole/freckle/spot to fill up space.
CHIN.
okay this is cheating, because it's not in the 'midface', but it helps!
traditionally the korean beauty standard prizes a slim v-shaped face, and enjoys contouring the entire cheek and chin to be v-shaped; but if you want to focus on the more baby-faced dolly trend, leave the cheekbones bare and only contour the chin to make it more v-shaped and small; a smaller chin will contribute to a fuller midface. you can also shorten the chin instead of a v-shape by applying contour horizontally at the base, or by applying blush to the chin.
HAIR.
again not part of the midface, but hair makes a massive difference in one's overall appearance and can alter the appearance of the midface.
firstly, to minimize the appearance of the face and forehead, you can fill in your hairline, either with eyeshadow, eyeliner, or whatever product you prefer. this is a type of contouring and gives both the appearance of fuller healthier hair, and a smaller face and forehead.
in terms of facial harmony, the eyes are 'meant to be' in the middle of the head (from tip of head to chin). if your eyes are higher than the midpoint, this can be adjusted by increasing your cranial top, that is the distance between the top of your head and hairline, by voluminizing your hair (or adding accessories, etc.) expanding this upper area will make your lower face (and your midface) smaller in comparison. dearpeachie has a few youtube tutorials on high cranial top, i haven't really watched them but they might be useful for hairstyling tips.

any kind of bangs like curtain bangs that halt by the side of the face and 'break up' the midface can also help. curls that voluminize the appearance of the head horizontally can also help broaden the perception of the face and make the face look smaller overall by comparison. earrings with a rounded, clustered, short effect can have a similar effect in breaking up the face.

CONSIDERATIONS
remember -- you can skip the steps contraindicated by your own features!! for example, if you have a broad round face, straight thick low eyebrows can be super unflattering. sure, it might shorten your midface... but at what cost????? (though of course if you like how it looks then please by all means do it, the only person that has to like your face is you!)
please also remember that you of course don't need to do every single step listed above!! nothing is 'essential'. if you don't like glowy skin, you don't HAVE to have glowy skin. if you just can't shorten your philtrum in a way you like, leave it out. choose the steps you like best and that work the best for you and focus on those! don't try to cram everything in and overcrowd your face or make it too short. at the end of the day, overall harmony (and being happy with yourself) is the most important thing.
note which tips shorten the midface by vertically shortening the visual space (eg. placing blush across the nose), vs. broadening the visage relative to the rest of the face (eg. glowy voluminous skin). this may be helpful in choosing which steps flatter you the most.
also this is not a comprehensive list of all tips, nor will every tip work for everyone!! ymmv. please try them out to your own discretion and adjust for your personal features and preferences.

at the end of the day, please remember you are so much more than your face, your value is so much greater than someone else's subjective evaluation of your appearance. the midface does not change how beautiful you really are. many people prefer longer faces, and many incredibly beautiful people have longer faces. the most important person that needs to love you is yourself. beauty standards can be toxic and dangerous; do not let it hurt you. do not let it make you compare yourself to others. do not let it trick you into bringing down other women (or people). and never, never let it bring you down. beauty is for empowerment and self-love. use it; don't let it use you!!

Starboard 11'2" IGO Zen SC

Review of this board after owning for half a year.
This is my third board after owning a BIC performer 10' and then the Costco Body Glove inflatable.
I have had trouble with glue failures in the tropics and chose Starboard due to the welded seam construction. In addition, the Igo Zen seemed to be overall high quality construction at a more reasonable price than Red or others.
My impressions:
Love the board! It's quite light and thin when folded yet feels very solid.
The Zen version has a special linear drop-stitch that is not as rigid perhaps as the best drop-stitch (woven) they use in the Deluxe version, but is reasonably stiff. A bit better than the Body Glove, much better than the BIC.
I like how it tracks.
It has a glide to it that I did not experience with the other boards. It makes you want to go faster. I like the 31" width. For me, this is limit for comfortable paddling and I wouldn't want anything fatter. 30" would be perfect especially if any longer.
The graphics are awesome. Didn't think I'd care about that but it really rocks a nice design and I like seeing it.
HATE the bag. I use a bag every time I go out and the one they bundle with this board is just wrong. It's waaay too big, literally a foot too long and thus ends up very floppy at the top. I don't like using it as a backpack (too tall) and traveling with it was a real nightmare. The wheels tempt you to believe that you could roll it through an airport like luggage but once you learn how it doesn't actually work, then you will want a dolly. I had the misfortune to drag it back and forth from one end of an airport to another 3 times (canceled flights). When I got it home, I immediately put it into an older Body Glove backpack for carrying around and am gonna sell the Starboard. Watch Ebay if you need something gigantic for a life raft or something.
I tried to talk to Starboard about the bag because it just seemed so wrong for the board but they really don't have much time for customers. Eventually somebody answered me that it is the right bag because they have a one size fits all approach and tough luck. I was not impressed with Starboard customer support. On the other hand, I loved dealing with the retailer - Green Water Sports- and highly recommend them. Great prices, great service great people. There was nothing they could do about the bundled bag being mis-sized though.
The bundled pump works. Kinda high resistance on the intake, not as easy to use as the BodyGlove or the BIC (GRC) pump. Don't like using it on the high volume setting due to even more intake resistance, but high pressure setting is ok. I have a tiny rechargeable air mattress inflater I use to get it up to 1psi and then pump. The full electrics are too noisy for my usual put-in.
One nice little feature that surprised me was the fin screw. They put a plastic handle on the end and it's way easier then the flat blade type tool-less screws. I have now copied that and put a little handle on my other fin screws with epoxy putty. Recommended hack.
I also like their included lightweight leash. It's more comfortable and while not as strong as the usual coiled leashes, it's good enough for anything but surfing. Wish it was a few inches longer though.
Durability: By the tenth time I took it out, the valve started giving me trouble. It stays latched down and won't come up. Then after a lot of twisting and fiddling it's up but then hard to get it to latch down when deflating. I am going to start just holding it down and never latching it. I don't know why this happens, it worked ok the first ten times. I really work to keep sand away from the valve but do use it on a beach, like my other two boards. I don't think that's why the valve latch is failing though.
EDIT: MY BAD. THE LATCH IS A VARIATION ON THE TWIST TYPE HALKEY-ROBERTS MAKES AND REQUIRES A DECISIVE PUSH ONLY ACTION UNTIL A CLICK DETENT IS FELT. I HAD BEEN USING IT WRONG DUE TO EXPERIENCE WITH STANDARD HR half turn valve. After cleaning and operating with simple push-pop, it seems to be mostly working right now.
A new thing I'm dealing with today is the side rail wear. They seem to use a really tough (they call it "Galvanized") rail fabric but turns out that it's wearing away from the paddle rubbing it. I can feel it getting rougher along the line and just put some tape over it.
EDIT. THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE STARBOARD 3-PIECE PADDLE'S LOWER JOINT RUBBING. DON'T KNOW HOW TO AVOID BUT SINGLE OR 2 PIECE MAY NOT EVER HAVE THIS ISSUE.
In sum, this board is lovely to own and use. I really like the Zen model for it's lightness. It's elegant. It is fun to paddle. Tracks well.
If you can find this board without the bag and pump bundle, even if it's just $40 less, buy that. You will be better off without that bag and there are better pumps for $50 out there.
A final note is that while I was deciding, people here suggested that I should go longer. I actually went to 11'2" instead of the shorter one. They were right. Next one will be over 12'. More glide is more fun!

Essay I wrote a while back about the bushwick punk/metal/goth/alt-country scene

Let’s do an exercise. Close your eyes, envision a historical reenactor. What picture forms in your mind? Old men with questionable politics sweating through their Confederate grays as they fife and drum down a field? A smiling, middle-aged swinger serving mugs of foamy beer in a corseted dress? Maybe you thought of the gentle YouTube presence of James Townsend And Sons, makers of historical garments and crockery. Whoever comes to mind, I doubt you conjured an image of cool kids. Consider, though, Bushwick: All these kids with their teased mullets and bullet belts and boutique cassette releases and darkwave and/or country side projects are doing historical reenactment, full time, 24/7. Going to Bootleg Bar(n) on a Saturday in your hottest moto boot/cropped tee/leather pant combo to listen to records from the ‘80s is, functionally, the same thing as going to the woods with a bunch of baby boomers in wool gabardines to cook back bacon on an open fire before reenacting Lexington and Concord in the morning.
Choose your fighter: You could be a hard-rocking biker from 1974 (motorcycle not required), or a goth being interviewed by Bernie Sanders at the Burlington Mall. You could be a Sex Pistol, a Bakersfield outlaw, a shirtless NWOBHM-er, a sniveling post-punk in a too-big tweed blazer. You could even be a rudie skinhead, provided you have the patience to constantly explain that your particular choice of shoelaces and MA-1 jacket means that you're actually against racism. You can be any combination of these or any other days-gone-by counterculture, so long as you agree to pretend that music stopped coming out in 1991. Go to any bar that plays guitar music to young people and what you'll find is a renaissance fair, replacing King Arthur and Guinevere with Siouxie Sioux and Townes Van Zandt. Never mind the punks of the ‘80s who would’ve happily beat up a drag queen, or throw a full beer at a DJ who played Dolly Parton. Nevermind that the Metalheads hated the punks, and that the punks hated the goths. Nevermind the bollocks. Time is a flat circle that heals all wounds. Up the punx.
And it's not just the fashion. The music exists in this fantasy world too. Check out the bands these kids play in. It's all decades worship, all sounding straight out of 1984 only worse, lower fidelity, trying to replicate not just the sound of an era, but the thirty years of wear and tear endured by obscure cassette releases before they were ripped and uploaded to YouTube. At a time when bedroom and laptop production can yield a high-fidelity, radio-ready song, the decision to have your demo sound like shit and come out on cassette is no longer born of financial necessity but aesthetic preferences. Caelum Audio Tape Pro is a powerful audio plug-in that can be used on the master channel of a ProTools session to ensure that your SS Decontrol tribute band is fighting to be heard over warbling tape hiss and blown-out drums. For your darkwave side project? A JUNO-60 emulator running on Ableton, with a TR-808 drum rack, with bonus points awarded if the sample pack was recorded to tape. If none of your friends run a label, and no one in the band has parents rich enough to fund a cassette release, the album cover on BandCamp should still be formatted like a J-Card, like it could’ve come out on cassette. It's all very hauntological (a word I love to hate to use), but in spite of the rigorous adherence to these mythical bygone eras, everything is a bit too pristine to feel wholly authentic. Much like the crisp costuming of Bridgerton or the uncanny clean streets of HBO’s The Gilded Age, the digital precision of modern tools can never truly bring the past to life, only a version of it. Carefully manicured grit and grime is neither gritty nor grimy. As an example, allow me to put you on to some game: The Halftone Zine Machine, a photoshop template meant to emulate the visual language of inexpensive DIY printing methods common to the punk and metal scenes of the 80s and 90s. Two clicks and twenty bucks and the only thing that gives your gig flier away is the "@" sign before the names of the bands. As a graphic designer, I've been paid hundreds of dollars to run crisp iPhone photos of bands through this bad boy for tour posters, band merch and EP releases. I see it everywhere, all the time, on BandCamp and YouTube, on Instagram and bootleg “vintage” tees from Shopify brands. It's unmistakable, cutting through the design of every gig flier and album cover like Ringo's squeaky kick drum pedal on “All I've Got To Do.” Once you've internalized the Halftone Zine Machine, you'll never see a forest again, only two or three copy-and-pasted trees. There is no filth left in the world, no grime, only asset packs and distressed fonts, grunge brush workflows for Adobe Illustrator that seek to breathe life into the sterile and controlled by mimicking the chaos of old mimeograph and Risograph printers.

tried the recently-announced free amazon shipping to philippines. from order to quezon city doorstep, took less than 2 wks. the last-mile drop was done via motorcycle, booked through ninjavan (possibly by a 3rd party consolidator?). box did not pass through the hassle of local post office.
the books are packed same way to when they are shipped domestically within US—loose (not tightly packed inside the box) and with simple ‘air cushions’ (see pic). the corrugated carton is also not double-walled, not any thicker than usual. as a result, the philip roth book has some creases in its jacket and bumps on the corner covers. i would have hated those bumps and creases 10yrs ago; i’m at peace with those small stuff now. :-) the other two items are okay; probably helped that they are shrinkwrapped at publisher side. calibrate-to-lower your expectations when shipping bare paperback.
more important: the savings is clear. in fact, not looking at the tag price yet, this route is cheaper vs my usual way of going through friends’ address in CA or TX, where sales tax is charged outright upon checkout, plus add the balikbayan box cost. this test order is showing a heavy 14lbs weight, but shipping cost is zero.
order more than 49USD, but less than 10K PhP, whatever is the forex on the day you click buy. also note that not all books and items are included in the promo; titles that are qualified are clearly marked in the product page and shopping cart, after you change your default shipping to a phil. address. but you’ll find books that you’ll want to ship for sure.
